We Help People Move Toward Self-Sufficiency

From 6 weeks to 96 years, the OUR Center has opened their doors to all ages. When listening to our clients we hear stories where the most vulnerable are the individuals who depend on loved-ones for food, shelter, and support which is why we take our ‘work’ to heart. In regards to families receiving the OUR Center’s emergency food assistance, 70% are families with children and 40% are families supporting a loved-one in poor health. In Longmont alone approximately 18% of families in poverty have children (the highest in Boulder county). Because we understand assistance can come in many forms it only made sense to start adapting to a Family Resource Model which encompasses 16 services to help our community at all age levels and needs; family relations, adult education, parenting skills, childcare, child education, housing, utility assistance, support network, health care access, substance abuse, employment, mobility, financial, food, legal, and mental health. In some occasions one family or induvial needs food and mobility assistance for a short-term and in other occasions we partner for a long-term strategy which could include adult education and childcare for example. We look at our clients the way they look at their own following generation which is why the OUR Center feels compelled to break any symptoms of the cycle of poverty and equip individuals of all ages to embrace their own road to self-sufficiency.

Boulder County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation; yet tens of thousands of people live below the federal poverty level. The federal poverty level is a national average poverty benchmark and doesn’t take into account the actual cost of living in an expensive place like Boulder County. When fixed incomes don’t meet a need or emergency situations arise, greater Longmont residents need a hand-up to prevent homelessness, maintain work and performance in schools and enhance family and individual potential. The OUR Center understands these situations and has created a welcoming, supportive and inclusive place for greater Longmont residents to seek an array of services to regain or begin their road to self-sufficiency. The OUR Center understands these situations and has created a welcoming, supportive and inclusive place for greater Longmont residents to seek an array of services to regain or begin their road to self-sufficiency. In mutual collaboration with our program participants, we develop personalized plans to assist individuals and families move toward self-sufficiency. Each participant meets with a Resource Navigator to explore their personal Self-Sufficiency Matrix and, through two-way follow-up, they regain or begin the road to self-sufficiency. We provide confidentiality, respect, compassionate care, and honesty with all individuals and families. (from general brochure)
