With the establishment of this program more than 25 years ago, one unified agency furnishing services formerly offered by various non-profit and religious groups was created in Longmont. After an intake interview, professional caseworkers and trained volunteers provide emergency food, transportation, utilities, furniture, minor medical prescriptions, referrals for emergency shelter, and homeless-prevention help, including rent and utility assistance. Although services in the Basic Needs Program are typically provided in times of crisis, agency staff work in partnership with families to help them regain self-sufficiency.
Call our Intake Office at 303.772.5529 for appointment if your needs include rent, utilities, shelter, and/or prescriptions. Our priority is to assist families with children who are residents of the greater Longmont area. Assistance to households without children may be provided after a thorough assessment has been done and as resources permit.
Basic needs we may be able to assist you with include:
Shelter
Shelter is provided on a night-per-night basis to families who have become homeless and can verify residency in the greater Longmont area a minimum of 30 days. An emergency one-night stay is given at a local motel (three nights in the case of a weekend stay), with follow-up the next business morning with a caseworker at the OUR Center. The after-hours emergency contact is the Longmont Police Department at 250 Kimbark St., Longmont, phone number 303-651-8555.
Housing
Caseworkers can assist with housing referrals in the case of homelessness or potential homelessness. Services may include a referral to transitional housing or a list of low-income housing options.
Rent
This is typically a one-time, emergency service provided after verification of the client’s ID, address, income/expense information, and family composition, and in negotiation with the landlord. Application fees, deposits or late fees are not covered.
Utilities
This is typically a one-time, emergency service provided after verification of the client’s ID, address, income/expense information, and family composition, and in negotiation with the utility provider. Application fees, deposits, and reconnect fees are not covered.
Glasses
We may be able to provide assistance with prescription glasses after assessment by a caseworker and verification of client’s ID, address, income/expense information, and family composition, as well as an original prescription from a certified optometrist.
Dental
In most cases, referrals are made to the nearest low-cost dental clinic. We may be able to partner with them in providing assistance for emergency dental needs after assessment by a caseworker and verification of client’s ID, address, income/expense information, and family composition, as well as an original estimate from a dentist.
Prescription
Emergency, one-time prescriptions may be provided such as antibiotics prescribed during a hospital stay after assessment by a caseworker and verification of client’s ID, address, income/expense information, and family composition, as well as an original prescription from a doctor. Does not include ongoing prescriptions or narcotics.
Local Transportation
RTD bus tokens or bus passes are provided for those who can provide verification of a job interview or medical appointment, or have been approved for transportation assistance to begin a new job.
Referral to other community resources
Caseworkers will work with each client to form an individualized case plan, including referrals to other community resources as applicable.
